Filing bankruptcy does not make you a bad person. It does not even mean that you are bad with money, or that you do not keep your word. Sometimes, things happen that prevent us from doing what we want to do. That is not a reflection on our character. That is just life.
Bankruptcy is not a Dirty Word
Fortunately, there are ways to deal with things that are out of our control. Rather than being hopeless, and reduced to a slave to creditors, we have bankruptcy. It does not need to be a last resort. Bankruptcy is just a way to get things back on track when we see them getting out of control
U.S. Citizens have a right to bankruptcy. It is a federal program, contained in federal law, just like other social programs. If you lose your job, and really need some help, you would accept unemployment, right? Unemployment is a government program, too. It helps you when you need it. Unemployment protects you if you lose your job. Bankruptcy protects you if you get into credit problems. Similarly, Social Security is a federal program to provide for you in old age. Nobody feels bad about using the Social Security system when they need it. There is no reason to feel bad about using the bankruptcy system when you need it. Government programs are made for us to use as we need to. As long as we do not abuse them, there is no shame in using them. That’s why they are there.
